Second Amendment to the United States Constitution

The Second Amendment (Amendment II) to the United States Constitution is the part of the United States Bill of Rights that protects a right to keep and bear arms from infringement by the federal government [1]. The American Bar Association has described this right as among the most controversial of the rights codified in the Bill of Rights.

The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that an outright ban by the federal government on home possession of an operable firearm, such as a handgun, violates the Second Amendment, and has upheld the constitutionality of longstanding restrictions on the possession of firearms including handguns.
